View Full Version : PostgreSQL Problem

This is definitely a problem created by myself and not HM. It happened quite a while back and I'm only getting around to asking about it now. I must have done something to block HM access to PostgreSQL but then I think I made things worse by playing mr fixit. I backed up my PostgreSQL folder and my HM manager folder (to try to save any collected data, however unlikely that may be), uninstalled and then reinstalled them both. When that didnt work, I think I ended up deleting the PostgreSQL folder and re-installing again, which I'm thinking was probably a mistake.

Anyways. HM still doesn't connect to PostgreSQL. HM still wont run without connecting so I can't use HM at all.

I'm hoping someone can help me figure this out. If I can save the data - great! If not, I'd at least like to start from scratch with the data and be able to use HM again.

I don't know where else to start. What else can I tell you?
PostgreSQL is version 8.4
My windows is XP
HM is vers. 1

my host file in "C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc" looks like this at the bottom

#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost

after that: entries inserted by Spybot

# Start of entries inserted by Spybot - Search & Destroy
127.0.0.1 www.--------
-------lots of entries --->
-------------------------.com
# This list is Copyright 2000-2008 Safer Networking Limited
# End of entries inserted by Spybot - Search & Destroy

Any other info - I'd be glad to provide.

Here's hoping someone can help me!

Thanks.

Uninstall Spybot.

In the hosts file, delete ALL entries created by Spybot.
The hosts file should ONLY contain:

# Copyright (c) 1993-2009 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

# localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.
# 127.0.0.1 localhost
# ::1 localhost

The reboot.

Thanks for your help.

The hosts file now looks just like this:

# ::1 localhost

I'm still getting the following message.

52261

I click ok and then this pops up:

52271

I click OK and ...

52281

I click Connect and get this:

52291

Clicked Yes...

52301

Whatever process I "try again" from here, I get the same result.

Thanks again for your help. I'm willing to try whatever you suggest next.

Just realized I missed your first instruction to uninstall Spybot. Hopefully I can reinstall it later? It wasn't a conflict before.

I'll try.. BRB.

Is the secondary logon running?
Turn on the secondary Logon. The secondary logon service is a standard windows service which is available on every windows computer. In the latest versions it is not started automatically. You need to start it via control panel > administrative tools > services. Starting it once should insure it works in the future also.

Can you install SQL 8.2 to a different port (for example 5433): http://ftp.postgresql.org/pub/binary/v8.2.22/win32/postgresql-8.2.22-1.zip

Is your Windows XP updated to service pack 3 and has ALL .net framework and critical updates installed, when you manually run a Windows update?

secondary logon - took no action. looks like it was already enabled:
52681

I uninstalled PostgreSQL using the uninstaller found in the PostgreSQL folder in Program Files in preperation to re-install it soon. I got these messages:
52711
and
52721

The PostgreSQL contains a folder called "8.4" which still contains a folder called "Data". The "data" folder has 682 files in 16 folders and is 32 MB.

Then, I realized I hadn't checked my windows updates yet so I postponed the process of reinstalling PostgreSQL and went to do my updates. Turns out I had quite a few non-critical updates:
52771

After rebooting and updating and rebooting and updating and rebooting and etc etc, My windows was fully updated (to service pack 3).

I went back to try to reinstall PostgreSQL from the link you provided but didn't get far enough in that process to see if I could install to a port 5433.

At this screen:
52731
I didn't change anything and I left password blank. I clicked next:
52741
clicked ok...
52751

Thank you Patvs for your help!

Delete the postgres user: click on Start and go to Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt

* If you are on Vista, rightclick and choose "Run as Administrator".

A black box should appear. Type 'net user postgres /delete' (without the quotes) and press enter.

The user is now deleted and you can (re)install PostgreSQ L.
(and it will accept any password)

It feels like we're getting close!

I successfully deleted the postgres user using Command Prompt

Then, I got further in the installation process this time than before. It looked like it was almost done when I got this message:

52841

Then, from "user accounts" in control panel, I confirmed that the user account being used (there's only one on this computer) is "computer administrator".

Does your windows user name have any unique 'cyrillic characters' or consists of two words (with a space in between)?
Is so you will need to create a new windows user and install postgresql under that user.

My windows user name is 'Mitch', without the quotes.
