"an error accurred while loading the prefs files - Root element is missing"

This appears when I try to load HEM.

Also, can someone help with something else - User Account Control appears saying " do you want the following program from an unknown publisher to make changes to this computer?
How can I get this message to stop appearing?

Thanks
Chawkdee

Which Operating System, Firewall, and Anti-Virus are you using?

For W7 and Vista you must set \holdem manager\holdemmanager.exe, hudfuncsapp.exe are started as administrator. Run the windows explorer and navigate to your Holdemmanager2 installation directory. Right click the executables and select properties... then select "Run as admin" from the compatibility tab.

Add exceptions to the windows firewall for those files even if the firewall is turned off. If you have a 3rd party firewall, do the equivalent or uninstall it temporarily.

Make sure your video card drivers and windows auto updates are fully updated. Make sure you have Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 (or later for w7) installed.

Delete the Users/../AppData/Roaming/HoldemManager/Config/prefs.xml file. Then restart the program.

Sorry, I should have said that I have HEM 1.

I don't understand this.

I turned off the UAC but still doesn't open.
At the bottom of my screen there is the HEM icon and it has a yellow and blue shield covering the bottom right of it.

Man, I wish there had been computers when I was at school. Would it be easier if I bought the HEM2?

Blue shield--> means you have high security settings, and HoldemManager as a result of that doesn't have full administrator priviliges.

Delete: C:/Program Files(x86)/RVG SOftware/HoldemManager/Config/prefs.xml file
Then restart the program.

If that doesn't resolve it, reinstall with the full installer @ http://www.holdemmanager.com/Downloads/Holdem_Manager_Setup.exe

If you want to come round and trash my apartment that'll be fine as well

Root element error is the sign of a corrupt prefs.xml file.
When you delete that, you will have to re-setup your HUD.

To prevent this in the future (so you can import it again and won't lose your HUD), export your custom HUD, hud options--> player preferences--> export your HUD

Pat's steps should work. Otherwise,

Uninstall and Reinstall Holdem Manager
http://faq.holdemmanager.com/questions/126/Using+Revo+Uninstaller+ - Using Revo Uninstaller (uninstall HM with Revo FREE and reinstall it)

Please install this:

http://www.holdemmanager.com/downloads/Holdem_Manager_Setup.exe

Then, you can update

Please try this version, reimport the tournament summaries:

Hi, I am having this problem too at the moment and have previously fixed it before with the steps you mentioned.

However before I do it again I was wondering if there is any chance at all of salvaging my HUDs? As they took quite a while to create.

Thanks

Rob

After you've re-created your HUD, export your HUD, hud options--> player preferences--> select the HUD--> export it.
