I am trying to transfer my HM database (version 1.09 beta 35) from my desktop (XP) into a new HM installation on my laptop (Vista).
I am following the restore function instruction pointing to the HMbackup.backup file but I always get an ''aborted because of error'' message.
Is there any other way to backup and transfer a database and configuration from one computer to another?

If you have removable media large enough for the database original files you can transfer the entire \postgresql\8.x\data folder and reinstall using the same DB. Otherwise you will want to export the old DB to text files and import them to the new machine to rebuild the DB.

To reinstall using the current \data:

Please update to the latest beta - http://www.holdemmanager.com/downloads/HmBetaUpdate.exe

Vista: Turn off UAC - http://www.holdemmanager.net/faq/afmviewfaq.aspx?faqid=73

Turn off Windows Firewall for installing HM and PostgreSQL. Once you get those installed you can add exceptions to the firewall. If you have a 3rd party firewall, uninstall it completely before installing HM/SQL - http://www.holdemmanager.net/faq/afmviewfaq.aspx?faqid=171

For uninstalling SQL please follow these steps:

1) Uninstall PostgreSQL from the Windows Control Panel.
2) If you are moving the DB to a different drive/partition, manually cut or copy the \Postgresql\data directory to it's new location.
3) run the command - start > run > cmd >

net user postgres /delete
4) reboot.
5) Install the same version of PostgreSQL as your current DB using these instructions - http://www.holdemmanager.net/faq/afmviewfaq.aspx?faqid=177
6) If you have moved/installed your DB to a non-default location, please make sure to change the 'Data Directory' path during the installation.

For creating a new DB and export/import of hands:

*Try creating a new UTF DB - http://www.holdemmanager.net/faq/afmviewfaq.aspx?faqid=146
*Now import a small portion of your \HMArchive so you can see if the problem exists in the new DB - http://www.holdemmanager.net/faq/afmviewfaq.aspx?faqid=173
*If the new DB seems to work properly, you will want to import the rest of your archives to the new DB, and export/import the hands from the old DB, and then delete the old DB. - http://www.holdemmanager.net/faq/afmviewfaq.aspx?faqid=21

I did copy the entire \postgresql\8.x\data folder into a temporary directory
on my laptop as you suggested, but before proceding I did uninstall HM and PostgreSQL because I thought I might have messed things up in my previous backup try.

Then I tried to reiinstall PostgreSQL8.3 but when I get to the initialize database cluster menu I get an error message ''The specified data directory
is not empty'' so now I am stuck there.

Just uncheck Initialize cluster.

Ok now I completed the installation of PostgreSQL and of HM but when I try to launch HM the database control panel opens wirh the login name ''postgres'' as default (I had to put ''postgresuser'' during installation),
and when I try to connect (using ''postgres'' or ''postgresuser '' same result)
I get ''a connection to PostgreSQL could not be made. Would you like to have Holdem Manager attempt to start the service?''.
Weather I click yes or no nothing happens.

Thank you for your timely support but I just spent another couple of hours
of frustration after making sure I uninstalled everything concerning PostgreSQL, I then tried to reinstall it and it almost went through, but then installation stopped telling me to verify that I have sufficient privilege to start
system service.
The UAC is always off on my laptop so I don't know what else to do to bypass
that problem.
I really like HM, is the best program of that kind but this is way to complicated for me. Regretfully I will have to go back to using PT, hoping that
in the future there will be an easier way to deal with PostgreSQL.
I would even be prepared to pay for phone support but I doubt this will happens.
Thanks anyway.

We are actually dealing with this exact issue currently to make it easier in the future.

You have been dealing with PT support for far too long. ;)

Well after giving up, I tried one last thing, adding the ''127.0.0.1 localhost'' line
to the ''host'' file in Windows\system32\drivers, and that was the missing link.

So now I have a clean installation with a brand new empty DB on my Vista laptop.

What I need to do now is transfer the DB (hand history and configuration)
from my XP desktop.
Is it enough to copy the \postgresql\8.x\data folder from desktop to laptop,
or there is something else that needs to be done?

I want to re-install Holdem Manger without losing all of my settings and preferences. Can this be done? - http://www.holdemmanager.net/faq/afmviewfaq.aspx?faqid=98

You want to make sure you backup your Processed/Archived hand histories, your entire \config folder, and your exportednotes file. http://www.holdemmanager.net/faq/?f=119. I usually just copy my entire \Holdem Manager directory.

Make sure you export your tournament summaries: Tourney > Results > Dataview > All Hands > Right-Click > Export Tourney Results and Summaries.

I would also make sure you manually export the database to hand history text files:

HM > Options > Database Management > Connect > Export Hands

How do I export or import hands into and from Holdem Manager? - http://www.holdemmanager.net/faq/afmviewfaq.aspx?faqid=173

Make sure you copy that folder as well as the other stuff I mentioned.

This helps to insure that if anything goes wrong with the backup/restore, you can manually import the exported files to rebuild.

You have sql 8.3 on both machines?

Try this method:

http://www.holdemmanager.net/faq/afmviewfaq.aspx?faqid=12

If that doesnt work properly for any reason, you can simply take the exported text files and archived handhistories, and manually import them to your new empty DB.

I now transferred hand history to the HM on the Vista laptop and resetted all my alias except the one on Cake Poker which does not appear.
Also I played a few hands on Cake in order to setup the import folders but
nothing appears on the designated folder.

What version of HM? Please update to the latest beta from the link in my signature.

To get all your missed hands imported

1) Right-Click your Desktop > New > Folder.
2) Go to your \HMArchive folder - To verify the path, go to Options > Configure Auto Import Folders > Edit > Archive Folder: _________.
3) Open that folder and copy the hands (folders of hands) you think it has missed. The archive should be organized by \Month\DayOfMonth (example: D:\HMArchive\2009\07\31). Also get any hand files that are in your \poker site\hand history folder.
4) Paste them into your new desktop folder > HM > Import From Folder.

If that doesnt help, Please zip and email the problem hand histories, with a link to this thread, to support@holdemmanager.net

I am on version 1.09 beta 35.
There are no history files in the designated Cake directory although I just played some (save my history files enabled on Cake options).
Also I cannot find/activate my Cake alias.
No problem With Cake on XP desktop.

I guess the files on your Vista Laptop go to a different folder in your user path structure. You should search for the files.

Today's Cake hands are now in the designated folder as well as in the HHArchive folder, but I still cannot bring up my Cake alias so I still have no hands in HM.

Cake names are converted to lower case characters.
Please try to click on change and enter the first character of your cake nick in lower case.

armonica

It's all in lower case characters, same setup as in my XP desktop, where I have no problems.
When I type my nick in the alias management > add player it isn't recognized.

Please try importing some cake hands into a new database as a test:
