Sorry for these questions but I really need them answered before I purchase this remarkable peace of software.
Lets imagine a case scenario where my computer starts bugging and I wish to reinstall windows vista on it. this will erase HM along with all the player info that has been painstakingly gathered through thousands of hours of play!

I did not find anywhere anything on how this info could eventually be backed up/restored. And if it s at all possible to restore these hand/player info, to which extent would it be "restored"? I mean could I reinstall HM on another computer, get the licence key problem solved first and then put all the info somehow in HM? in the pokersite s history file where HM gets its info from? would all the same functions as before be fully available? I mean would the GRAPH (I love the graph) take these OLD reinstalled hands into account as if no reinstallation had ever taken place at all? would the table replayer work with all the OLD reinstalled hands? would the OLD "sessions" be up to date and reflect the OLD info they did originally?
thanks

HM imports your original hands and converts the data into a postgresql database,. This database can be archived in it's full form with an external drive. You can also manually export the database to new text files as form of a 3rd level backup (DB Backup, original hands, exported hands). You can also backup the database to a compressed file to restore on a new PC in case of a catastrophe.

The original hands are moved after importing to a \HMArchive folder. As long as you backup your processed/exported hand histories and you backup your \Holdem Manager folder, everything can be reinstalled and rebuilt.

I backup all this data locally every 6 hours to my external hard drive. I also back it up automatically every day to an offsite location: carbonite.com

Thanks for the reply
So if I understand things correctly in case of a catastrophe, the hand info and stats gathered between the time of my -last backup- and the -catastrophe-, will be lost. Right? Thus the importance of backing up constantly..? isnt there an automatic way of doing this? A more convenient way that would transfer backed up data to something such as an external drive every four hours for example

I use AllWay Sync to backup all of my important data on my PC every 6 hours. The same data is backed up on carbonite.com which is on an automatic, back-up as files are modified, schedule.

The first layer of protection, is to have your postgresql database (and holdem manager) installed on it's own physical hard drive (internal is better performance obviously). If you only have a single drive in your PC (like mine does currently) then I recommend you partition your hard drive, and put the DB on that partition. If your windows was to die and require a reformat, your custom partitions would be protected from the reformat. This wouldnt protect your data if your entire hard drive was to become inaccessible, like a separate physical drive though.

The 2nd layer of protection is a copy of your \postgresql\data, \holdem manager, .backup files, and exported hands.

The 3rd layer of protection is your original hand history files in the \HMArchive (this should also be on the separate partition/drive).

If all of that was to fail, I would have to request all of my lifetime hands from the various poker sites to import and rebuild.

Ok I just verified and realized that I have 2 empty partition, data E: and data D:
Did you mean that the "path" to the -postsql DB-and -HEM DB- should go to D: (which is empty now)?
You re talking about maintaining performance so I dont suppose you re talking about simple "copies" here but the actual "path" to the DB these programs use live.
should postsql and HEM remain on C: and their DB be on D:?if that s the way it should be done, how do I move thse DBs along with \HMArchive do D:?
the vista OS is on C: too
how do I do this? any tutorials?

Correct. You will need to do a bit of copy, reinstall, paste a copy of the config files to the new installation.

My HEM, and SQL \data folder are on my B partition. My HMArchive is on my A drive, with all my other personal data (and tons of old hand archives and sql backups).

Before you uninstall HM:

I want to re-install Holdem Manger without losing all of my settings and preferences. Can this be done? - http://www.holdemmanager.net/faq/afmviewfaq.aspx?faqid=98

You want to make sure you backup your Processed/Archived hand histories, your entire \config folder, and your exportednotes file. http://www.holdemmanager.net/faq/?f=119. I usually just copy my entire \Holdem Manager directory.

I would also make sure you manually export the database to hand history text files:

HM > Options > Database Management > Connect > Export Hands

How do I export or import hands into and from Holdem Manager? - http://www.holdemmanager.net/faq/afmviewfaq.aspx?faqid=173

Make sure you copy that folder as well as the other stuff I mentioned.

This helps to insure that if anything goes wrong with the backup/restore, you can manually import the exported files to rebuild.

If you have Vista, please verify that UAC is still off. - http://www.holdemmanager.net/faq/afmmain.aspx?faqid=73. If it is on, please turn it off and reboot.

Turn off Windows Firewall for installing HM and PostgreSQL. You must also add exceptions to the Windows firewall, even if it is off. If you have a 3rd party firewall, uninstall it completely before installing HM/SQL - http://www.holdemmanager.net/faq/afmviewfaq.aspx?faqid=171

1) Make a backup of your C:\Program Files\RVG Software\Holdem Manager\Config folder, and any other important files mentioned earlier.
2) Uninstall HM with www.revouninstaller.com using the Deep setting.
3) If given the option, on the 2 following screens of Revo, choose the Select All > Delete buttons to remove any registry entries and leftover files.
4) Reboot your computer
5) Install the complete setup of HM: http://www.holdemmanager.com/downloads/holdemmanager.zip
6) Download the latest patch HM: http://www.holdemmanager.com/downloads/HmBetaUpdate.exe
7) Test if it for a while and see if it work
8) Close down Holdem Manager and rename the current, working \config folder to \config_original. Now copy your \config folder from step 1 and paste it to your C:\Program Files\RVG Software\Holdem Manager\ fodler, to replace the one you just renamed.
9) Test if it works again for a while
10) If your old config folder causes problems, you can paste the contents of the \config_original folder back in.
11) Now you can import any notes and hud configs.

Please update to the latest beta - http://www.holdemmanager.com/downloads/HmBetaUpdate.exe

Vista: Turn off UAC - http://www.holdemmanager.net/faq/afmviewfaq.aspx?faqid=73

Turn off Windows Firewall for installing HM and PostgreSQL. Once you get those installed you can add exceptions to the firewall. If you have a 3rd party firewall, uninstall it completely before installing HM/SQL - http://www.holdemmanager.net/faq/afmviewfaq.aspx?faqid=171

For uninstalling SQL please follow these steps:

1) Uninstall PostgreSQL from the Windows Control Panel.
2) If you are moving the DB to a different drive/partition, manually cut or copy the \Postgresql\data directory to it's new location.
3) run the command - start > run > cmd >

net user postgres /delete
4) reboot.
5) Install the same version of PostgreSQL as your current DB using these instructions - http://www.holdemmanager.net/faq/afmviewfaq.aspx?faqid=177
6) If you have moved/installed your DB to a non-default location, please make sure to change the 'Data Directory' path during the installation.
