View Full Version : "é" character bug

I play the PokerStars site & my OS = XP. English" Small Stakes HM (Beta 34). I think I've found a bug. It doesn't bother me in the least, but I'm curious to know...

QUESTION: Is this bug due to the use of é (e-acute ASCII 130) in players name ?

A] In the PS table selection window...
*** I see this player name = fénix_pk

B] In the part of the HUD that shows the winner/winnings of the past 3 games. If I click on one of them to view a pop-up of the hand...
*** I see this player name = f_f_nix_pk
(the second f is actually an f with a hook - it's called a function sign or florin sign - ASCII code 159)

C] In HM Replayer...
*** I see this ab. name = f___nix
*** I see this for full name = fénix_pk

Kind regards
Michael

If possible could you post screen shots of it?

Could you also please email some of the hands with that player.

Please www.7zip.org the hands and email them to fabio@holdemmanager.net, with a link to this thread, and your forum name.

FABIO EMAIL:
There are only 3 hands with "fénix_pk". I've just emailed Fabio the hands (not bothered to zip 5kb)
I've attached them here as well. You will note that the player name is rendered correctly as "fénix_pk" in the HH's I've supplied

SCREENSHOTS OF REPLAYER:
What software do you use for clipped screenshots ?
Can you recommend a free screenshot program for XP that will allow me to capture parts of the screen ?
A link to a reliable source would be best if possible, because I'm not techy & I want to avoid anything with spyware etc

I use SnagIt which is not free.

Here is 1 that is well reviewed on the cnet site. I have never used it personally.

Thanks Fozzy. I've figured ScreenHunter out - got 3 cropped images ready...

Now what ? Where & how to upload ? All new to me

I have no problems with his name anywhere. Install the latest Beta: http://www.holdemmanager.com/downloads/HmBetaUpdate.exe (http://www.holdemmanager.com/downloads/HmBetaUpdate.exe) and go to Options -> Database Management.

After clicking on connect, choose "Create New Database" and you will be able to create a database with UTF8 encoding

I will have a careful think before I attempt this since everything is going so well otherwise :)

** Fozzy can you point me to more detailed instructions please ?
** Besides helping me view names correctly - what's the advantages of UTF8 encoding ?

A] In HH player name is displayed correctly:

B] In Players tab it's shown as fénix_pk:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2589/3956981743_0948067795_m.jpg

C] In Replayer it's also shown as fénix_pk:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2578/3956981735_778c9a48f3_m.jpg

D] The HUD in Replayer shows the Ab. Name as f___nix
I can see this, but ScreenHunter can't

E] The HM popup in the HUD when playing on PokerStars shows the name as f_f_nix_pk
I don't know how to show you that !

UTF8 character encoding seems to be not (fully) supported.

Loki - did you try it with a new UTF8 Database yet?

kz282 - are you experiencing the same problem despite having created a new DB?

PS: I'm using PostgreSQL 8.4

I couldn't say, but it is a simple thing to try to see if it cures your particular issue.

UTF8 character encoding seems to be not (fully) supported.

Why do you say that?

What is your problem exactly? The same as OP? I can't be sure by only looking a t a screen pic. We prefer to have an individual thread for each customer's problem, to make trouble shooting easier and less confusing, even if the problem is exactly the same. It is very easy to confuse 2 customers in a single thread.

I say that UTF-8 is not fully supported, because two one byte characters appear in the replayer and in any other fields instead of the correct, UTF-8 two byte character.

The player name from the history viewed with Total Commander:
normal text: Seat 6: Filobácsi ($19.75 in chips)
in UTF-8: Seat 6: Filobácsi ($19.75 in chips) The Stars client shows this.

I don't have any problems except that I see the same issue and want to provide more data to help you to solve this issue.

The hand history viewed from the replayer contains even more funny characters:

I hope that I could help. :)

Hi Fabio, Fozzy & kz282 - such a catchy name :)

** I have created new DB in UTF8
** I have made it the default DB
** Obviously I now have to import my HH's into the new DB from a folder, but which folder ?
** Please point me to IDIOT PROOF instructions on the safe way to do this import

Fabio are you suggesting I move to PostgreSQL 8.4 if I still get the character problem on the new UTF8 DB ?

kz282 - Thank you for taking the time to explain that to me. I have forwarded this thread to the developer for a reply.

The easiest way is to use the Import From Folder option and point it at a portion of your \HMArchive folder.

Your \HMArchive is likely not in your \Holdem Manager directory. We normally suggest you use C:\HMArchive, but you may have put it anywhere.

To verify the location: Options > Configure Auto Import Folders > Edit > Archive Folder: ___________________

It was C:\HMArchive

** I have done the import into the new DB - easy - thank you !
** When I created the DB I checked the "UTF8" box (it was checked already)
** Comparing DB's I am short on hands in the new DB, but I know why that is & I think I can fix it - I will deal with that on another day.

Q1] Until then I'll just make the "old" DB my default again - right ?

** The 3 hands I played with "fénix_park" are there
** In HM Replayer the name is still fénix_pk & the HUD ab. name is still f___nix

Q2] How to check new DB to ensure it is UTF8 format ?
Q3] What next if it is UTF8 ?

1 - sure

2 - start > programs > postgresql 8.x > pgadmin III > Double-Click or Right-Click > Connect tot he postgresql server, and then expand (+) the databases and connect to the new DB.

3 - I guess we would try making another new, utf DB. :p

Hi Fozzy

Sorry about the poor image quality. "ScreenHunter 5 Free" captures them as .GIF, but when I upload to flickr they are saved as .jpg & I haven't figured out how to save them on flickr any other way yet...

2] This is what I get:

http://1.2.3.10/bmi/farm3.static.flickr.com/2632/3963119642_459a0fd2d8_m.jpg

There isn't...
a tree to expand in the left pane just a red cross
a way to connect
a place in the right pane to check UTF

If I start postgreSQL in the normal way with either of the two DB's as default I get the identical above picture in both cases except obviously it says "yes" for running instead of "no"

Why can't I see two DB's (there must be two):

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2540/3962429895_68742e085d_m.jpg

The bottom one of the two DB's shown above is the new one that I named "UTF8 DB"

Hi Fozzy

Save them as PNG if possible. Photobucket > Flikr

There isn't...
a tree to expand in the left pane just a red cross

As I said, you need to 'Double-Click or Right-Click' that 'red cross' to connect to the server and databases.

As usual fozzy you are right :)

** photobucket is better than flikr & allows me to save as GIF at least (but not PNG)
** I went into "more options" in photobucket & set it to maximum possible file size upload for non-pro, but what's uploaded is still a tiny "thumbnail" file size compared with what's saved on my PC & I can't figure out why - its not worth downloading to here

Anyway back to business....
********************************************
See the attached file... I've attached the GIF directly from my PC, but for some reason it comes out as JPEG attachment - Hope it helps

Yes I've paid closer attention to your instructions fozzy & RIGHT CLICKED on the red cross & that produced the tree (though I had to think a bit about what my password was, but I found it eventually)

the upshot is...

The new DB I named "UTF8 DB" is encoded in UTF8 !!

What next ??

Michael

As usual fozzy you are right :)

** photobucket is better than flikr & allows me to save as GIF at least (but not PNG)

You save the screen shots as PNG using the screen shot software, and then upload the PNG file to photobucket.

Once you upload the full size image to photobucket copy the [IMG] code and paste it here to get the full size pic inline.

The new DB I named "UTF8 DB" is encoded in UTF8 !!

I guess I am a little confused now as to what problems exist for you still, in your new DB. This may be partly my fault for derailing the thread with talk abotu screen shots and image hosting, so I apologize.

A] SCREENSHOTS: No. It's good that you've spared the time to teach me a little about screenshots !! Thank you. "ScreenHunter 5 Free" software doesn't allow me to capture the image as PNG. There are no options of that kind in the free version. I am obliged to save as GIF. But I will work on this in my spare time, but it's not important at the moment to this...

B] THE "é" CHARACTER BUG FROM MY POINT OF VIEW:
This problem is not critical to my poker play. I'm not stressed by it in the least. I was reporting it out of courtesy & I was curious as to the cause. This is where we're at today

** The peculiar way that HM handles the player name "fénix_park" is NOT fixed by importing the "fénix_park" hands into my newly created DB
** I am absolutely confident that the new DB is encoded in UTF8

** The 3 hands I played with "fénix_park" are there
** In HM Replayer the name is still fénix_pk & the HUD ab. name is still f___nix

What do you suggest we try now Fozzy ? Or do you want to leave it for the developers ? I ask this because of what kz282 posted to this thread...

A NEW EXAMPLE OF THE BUG WITH OTHER "UNUSUAL" CHARACTERS:
How "rødblågrøn" appears in my ASCII DB:

CORRECT IN HH:
http://i844.photobucket.com/albums/ab8/_L_O_K_I_/3.gif

INCORRECT IN THESE TWO IMAGES:
http://i844.photobucket.com/albums/ab8/_L_O_K_I_/2.gif
http://i844.photobucket.com/albums/ab8/_L_O_K_I_/1.gif

I will now export to my UTF8 DB & report back

...

It is in the developer's hands at this point and we thank you for your assistance in de-bugging it. We have done some in-house testing of the High ASCII value characters, and the developers are working on a solution. I think it is something that wasn't able to be fixed before the UTF-8 encoding support. Now that we support UTF-8 they are hoping to be able to fix it in the near future.
