My HEM was working fine for a few weeks, but now it won't open.

I was hoping someone could post a walkthrough on how to fix a problem like this.

Here's the error I'm getting:

I try to open up HEM a window opens up saying:
An error occured while reading the config/holdem manager.config file: Root element is missing.

Holdem Manager will now backup the old config file and create a new one for you.

Then I click ok (the only option) and then a second window opens saying:

Unhandled exception has occurred in your application. If you click Continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue. If you click Quit, the application will close immediately.

Cannot create a file when tht file already exists.

If I click continue the program hangs up and freezes, if I click quit It quits out of the program.

At one point I tried resetting the PostRegSQL thing, but I was unable to recall the default username.

I want to be able to get the program working again, but I want to be sure that I won't lose the data I have already collected.

Thanks for any help!

Vista?
Make sure that UAC is switched off.

I suggest you delete the folder holdemmanager / config and download and reinstall the full version 1.08.04 again: http://www.holdemmanager.com/downloads/holdemmanager.zip

After that update to the latest Beta: http://www.holdemmanager.com/downloads/HmBetaUpdate.exe

And if its not too late: don't touch the postgresql installation if you don't want to loose your data.

If I delete the folder, download and re-instal will I have to go through the setup and installation procedure again? The install worked fine for me, but the set up sucks. For a commercial peice of software the set up is extremely tiresome.

Could someone post a screenshot of the default SQL set up? IE, the server name, defualt username, and other stuff...I never wrote down the info I put into the PostRegSQL boxes...

Thanks for the info earlyer, I will be trying to delete and reinstall this afternoon.

You need the infos for the connection from your installation.

Server is 127.0.0.1
Port 5432
User postgres
Password postgrespass or postgres or whatever you entered there.

hi. did all of the above and seems to be working but when i start up hem again i get the database control panel. i click on connect and get "a connection to postgresql could not be made. would you like to have holdem manager attempt to start the service." when i click on yes i get "holdem manager has started the service. please try again." and then it starts over when i click connect again.

all of the settings are right and postgresql are running, i think.

This is usually a firewall or windows update issue.

Which Operating System, Firewall, and Anti-Virus are you using?

First try to reboot. If that doesnt help delete the \postgresql\8.x\data\postmaster.pid file, if you see it.

If no help, try this:

Start > Programs > PostgreSQL > 8.x > Stop Service

Start > Programs > PostgreSQL > 8.x > Start Service

Add exceptions to the windows firewall, even if it is off. If you have a 3rd party firewall, do the equivalent or uninstall it temporarily - http://www.holdemmanager.net/faq/afmviewfaq.aspx?faqid=171

Please try following all of these FAQs, step by step:

1) http://www.holdemmanager.net/faq/afmviewfaq.aspx?faqid=34
2) reinstall the same version of postgresql, using the same \data folder - http://www.holdemmanager.net/faq/afmviewfaq.aspx?faqid=177
3) http://www.holdemmanager.net/forum/showthread.php?t=8261

If that doesn't help you will probably have to reinstall PostgreSQL completely and reimport your hands using these instructions - http://forums.holdemmanager.com/showthread.php?t=20755
