This is usually a firewall or windows update issue.

First try to reboot.

If no help, try this:

Start > Programs > PostgreSQL > 8.x > Stop Service

Start > Programs > PostgreSQL > 8.x > Start Service

If that doesnt help delete the \postgresql\8.x\data\postmaster.pid file, if you see it. And reboot.

If that doesn't help you will have to reinstall PostgreSQL completely. Use the installer from PostgreSQL: Welcome (http://www.postgresql.org)
If 8.4 fails, try http://ftp.postgresql.org/pub/binary/v8.2.22/win32/postgresql-8.2.22-1.zip

Did you try the steps Pat posted above again?
Some windows updates stop the Postgresql service. So you may need to delete the postmaster.pid file and restart the computer again.

I deleted the latest windows update files, and allways checked for the postmaster.pid file. Yesterday a software tech came for 3 hours and nothing, hes says that i should just upgrade to w7, but i dont want to do that yet.

Reinstall XP. Update it to Service Pack 3.
Install all additional .net framework updates.
