So here is my problem:

my old pc crashed, luckily i was able to make a copy of my whole HDD, unfortunately i am not able to export my hands on my old pc and i dont really have a clue how i would do this on a different pc.
also i have a mac now, but i am running vmware fusion so it should work fine.

i just dont really have a clue of how to get my old database back from just the files.
thanks in advance

Alright I guess that helps installing, but I dont get where I put the old database or should I already have a ...\postgres path and just move my old files there?

Yes. Manually create the \Postgres folder in your \Program Files. Then go in \postgres and create \8.3 and then copy your old \data folder into there. Make sure you untick the initialize db cluster and you should be good. It is relatively reliable when both installations use the same version of sql.

I did all that, but now when I try to start HEM, I get to the DB Control Panel where I am supposed to put in my name and the password.
But no matter what I type in it always says " A connection to PostgreSQL could not be made..." and it doesnt go any further (even the help from HEM doesnt do anything where it tries to start the service).

I installed postgresql now several times and still no name works.
hope you can help me.

That sounds like a firewall type issue.
