View Full Version : Getting postgres to use more memory

I just upgraded from 4GB to 8GB. I remember a while back changing some values in Postgres as described through a link in the Top 10 HEM performance increase thread, but that link doesn't seem to go to the same place any more and I can't figure out how to get change the values in postgres or exactly which values to change.

Any help would be appreciated.

Yes, I found this, but it doesn't tell me where to actually find the places to set different memory amounts. It just says what the different options do, not how to set them or what the recommended numbers are.

I had done this once before and seen a step-by-step guide that someone posted, but can't find it now. I remember it being a very easy process, but can't find the instructions now.

1)Go to Start > Programs > PostgreSQL 8.3 and look for Application Stack Builder.

Steps 2 - 7 are obsolete and unnecessary.

8) At the end of the installation, launch the Application Stack Builder.
9) Select your PostgreSQL Database Server and click Next.
10) Expand AddOns and select EnterpriseDB Tuning Wizard.
11) Download the tuning wizard by selecting your country and continuing.
12) Continue through the end of installation and launch the EnterpriseDB Tuning Wizard.
13) Select your PostgreSQL Database server and click Next.
14) Under Server Utilization, select Mixed and click Next.
15) Continue through the installation of the tuning wizard.

PostgreSQL memory usage has now been configured specifically for your computer's specifications and performance should be improved.

I was looking to fine tune postgres 8.4. but the tuning wizard doesn't seem to be available in the add-ons.

btw I tried tuning some of the settings mentioned at http://wiki.postgresql.org/wiki/Tuning_Your_PostgreSQL_Server but nothing really seemed to make a significant difference.

The tuning wizard has become a registration required add-on and I cant suggest it anymore. I actually registered and tried it, and it ruined my postgresql connection, so I gave up with it.

This thread has some good tips - http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/28/internet-poker/postgresql-optimization-tips-speed-up-yo-slow-ass-computer-362568/?highlight=postgresql+optimization

cheers Fozzy. I actually saw this one already. I think from another link you posted here. It's a very good thread. I had basically tried all the stuff suggested there already and nothing seemed to make a difference to my import speed at least. My speed seems to be good anyway. I was just trying to get everything I can out of it, I've made an alias of a few strong players as per one of the HM articles and want to look at data from this from time to time, but that's what HM understandably struggles on, can take several minutes for it to load and each time I change the filter it takes ages again. I get the feeling that there's nothing really more to be done there, other than buying more expensive hardware which I won't be doing for now.

Cheers, still takes ages though. I've done all I can now. Followed all the optimzation tips here and i think I've got a bt more out of HM and of my pc in general but it looks like it's a hard task for HM.

Sounds like it is time for SSD's. I really wish I could have waited a bit longer when I bought my PC, so I could have afforded SSD. Now I will just wait til next fall to build my super-computer, most likely.

How hard is it to replace my 750gb with a SSD, install windows, and use my current HD as a slave? :D

Hope it's ok to jump in folks DEFINITELY wait until AT LEAST next fall - why not consider a hybrid drive in the meantime Fozzy ? It makes a lot of sense from all angles - or maybe that's what you're thinking anyway judging from your slave comment

There are advantages to not going entirely SSD - SSD's are not all sweetness & light - better to ask a LOT of questions first IMO ...

Here is a heavy article on SSD's - though it's not totally up-to-date

This is the best place I know of to get excellent well-informed advice - geek heaven :)

Did you know SSD's slow down over time ? I didn't

PS somewhere else you talk about transferring data via USB - to an external drive. I think another option might be wireless to another drive in another machine. I was told this is quick...

That is exacty what I was thinking :), but I think I'll have to wait another year too :(

cheers for the info there Loki. I must have a good read through them. I hadn't heard of a hybrid drive before, sounds interesting.

With hybrid drive you can mostly get the best of both worlds AND save a yourself buckets of $'s

I was also thinking that it would be wise to allow plenty of time for the manufacturers to sort out mass production quality control - HDD's are fantastically reliable & I doubt that SSD's will be (at first) when they start churning them out in the millions

I now NEVER buy a new technology early after being hurt over the years by well respected names (sony, nokia, panasonic). When manufacturers compete to get products on the shelf it drives the price down, but they start to cut corners to meet budgets & release timings...

For example: I got one of the first LCD screens on the market - it was very good in its day, but I regretted it. Cheap switches, failing connectors, flimsy casing - the manufacturer had thrown quality control out of the window on the secondary aspects of the device - A bit like most British up-market cars of the 1970's - beautiful, but wouldn't start in the morning if you left it out in the cold & wet

Doesn't look all good for hybrid drives either http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,2845,2342725,00.asp
