Hi all,

When I try to create a new database I get the following error:
"Connection establishment timeout. Increase Timeout value in ConnectionString."

Where and how can I change this timeout value?

(Plz answer in windows-4-n00bs-language :p)

Are you running Vista, if so go to C:\Program Files\RVG Software\Holdem Manager and right click DBControlpanel.exe and select run as administrator.

Also can you confirm if the PostgreSQL service is running by following the instructions http://208.109.95.123/faq/?f=34 and stop and restart it

Still getting the same error. I'm using Windows XP BTW.

I got the same error running on a slow laptop but it was because stupid windows is trying to download crapdate SP3 in the background. Once the 306MB of bloatware (that doesn't install correctly) was finished downloading I was able to create the new db. Using 1.06.02 and XP Pro.

Hi TFZ,

this is most likely a problem with antivirus related software

I followed all the instructions above and even purchased and registered it. I still am getting the same error. I then turned off my Norton 360 and it still wouldn't work. Please help, I have spent over 3 hours trying to get this thing to work

I presume you have the same problem as the OP in that you get this error when creating a new database. What happens if you open the old database do you still get it?

Im not sure if you uninstalled Norton or just turned it off but from experience sometimes turning it off is not enough as the still are working in the background, same with Firewalls and thus sometimes the only way around is completely uninstalling however that should only be a last resort

Ive also seen lately where someone had a firewall built into their ethernet card that caused a similar problem. At least if we can 100% rule out antivirus and firewall then we can concentrate on other things however if it is either i could give you 100 other things to try that would be a waste of time.

Anyway hopefully well get to the bottom of this soon

I will try and give you as much info as I can.

First, when creating the database (where I timeout and am told to increase the connection string) the only database that shows up as old is a PT3 database from a trial version I have used. When I double click on that it says I am only allowed to use an HEM Database. I have uninstalled PT3 as a result.

Second, I have already unistalled and reinstalled Norton with no results and have also tried turning it off with no luck. This is in addition to turning off my windows firewall and uninstalling and reinstalling Postgresql.

Third, I have had a free version of AVG on here before and tried to completely uninstall it but some the folder say that access is denied because other programs are using it. All the files I could delete with AVG in it hae been deleted and I have disabled it. This may be the issue, but I kind of doubt it.

I am at my wits end with this thing. Is there any way to increase the connectiong string like it has asked? I'll try and stay patient and hopefully we can get this working. By the way, I am no the most computer savy person so please bare with me.

When I uninstalled Norton and Postgreql I then rebooted my comp and reinstalled them. Should I have tried to open up HEM while they were unistalled?

morny

Yeah when Norton is uninstalled please reinstall PostgreSQL, if you dont have any databases that you want backed up which i presume you dont since you said the only one in there was a PT3 one, then when you unistall postgreSQL please go to c:\Program Files\PostgreSQL and delete that PostgreSQL database and then do a complete install of this version of PostgreSQL http://wwwmaster.postgresql.org/download/mirrors-ftp?file=%2Fbinary%2Fv8.3.3%2Fwin32%2Fpostgresql-8.3.3-1.zip then run HM and try and create a new database and do all of this before installing Norton again

Increasing the timeout wouldnt help if it dosent connect by that stage its never going to connect so it just means you would wait longer for an error message

I'll do all this and get back to you within the hour. Thank you!

1. I uninstalled Norton

2. My comp would not let me delete PostgresQL through c:\Program Files\PostgreSQL. (Error Message) So I went though the contol panel/add or remove programs and uninstalled it from there.

3. The link you gave me for the new postgresql that takes me to the webpage sucked. It took me there and told me it was downloading anfd would automatically choose a mirror for me in 5 second, but the page just get refreshing every 5 seconds instead. I then tried choosing my own mirror and everytime I clicked on any link with US flaf it said page not found. SO I went through HM to install it and it got that done and was able to connect to it. Then tried creating database and same timeout happened.

4. Do you think it would be best if we could go through this over the phone and you could walk me through some things. I will leave Norton uninstalled until you get back to me and stay off all porn sites :) I can e-mail you my cell if need be

Morny...I posted my problem on 2+2 and you directed me to this thread. I uninstalled postgres and Norton, and then followed the link you posted to redownload postgres. The problem is that when I click on any of the mirrors to download, it says webpage not available. Then, when I tried to download and set it up through HEM, I got an error and it won't let me save the zip file. Any idea what is going on? Putting me on life tilt.

Thanks fabio...That link worked. I guess the only way to get my database fully restored is to just reimport all of my HHs???

morny

Do you all have any ideas what else I can do or is it 80.00 down the drain?

morny
09-24-2008, 12:03 PM
What else have you installed,i got this exact error yesterday and added HM to the exceptions list in Windows Defender and uninstalled their antivirus and it worked fine then. Have you a firewall installed?

erod13
09-24-2008, 12:45 PM
Currently:

I reinstalled Norton yesterday and believe I have a Windows Firewall going.

If you can tell me how to disable the Windows firewall, add HM to the defender list, I will uninstall Norton again and unistall HM to start over.

This is what your suggesting right???

I had this same problem. I was still running postgresql 8.0.x

I uninstalled my old version and installed the latest version of postgresql 8.3.x. I followed the setup instructions here http://www.holdemmanager.net/PostgreSQL_Install_Help.html.

And voila, my connection error went away.

Hope this helps.

Morny,

what am I suppose to e-mail you??? Are you looking for documents???

Setup www.teamviewer.com and email me to arrange a time for me to view your PC. Then when we have a suitable time you run teamviewer and then send me the ID and password it creates

I am having this problem as well. I am attempting to try HEM before purchase to no avail. My computer has ample resources and I am a reasonably savvy user. It's kind of annoying to hear "there's nothing more we can do" a few posts above this one. I'd like to be a customer...any progress on this issue?
