View Full Version : error starting the service: pgsql-8.3. with HEM2

Hello,

I just install HEM2beta today. I could connect to PostgreSQL 8.3 (I had to reintroduce the password "dbpass" manually but it worked).
Then I imported my database from HEM1 (about 3.000.000 hands in 5 hours approximately) without problem.
When I tried to replay a hand in the replayer, HEM2 blocked. I restart my computer and tried to reopen HEM2.
After that I can no more connect to PostgreSQL: ERROR: There was an error starting the service: pgsql-8.3. Please manually investigate the problem.
I followed all the instructions on the FAQ http://hm2faq.holdemmanager.com/questions/1001/Can+not+Connect+%7B47%7D+Failed+to+Start+PostgreSQ L+
(excepted the combo installer) but cannot solve the problem.
I don't dare to use combo installer because I'm afraid to loose all my database.
Can I use it and be sure I will find back all my hand histories?
If not, do you have an idee where the problem comes from? and how should I solve it?

Thanks in advance for your help.

This is usually a firewall or windows update issue.

First try to reboot.

If no help, try this:

Start > Programs > PostgreSQL > 8.x > Stop Service

Start > Programs > PostgreSQL > 8.x > Start Service

If that doesnt help delete the \postgresql\8.x\data\postmaster.pid file, if you see it. And reboot.

If that doesn't help you will have to reinstall PostgreSQL completely
Try installing SQL 8.2: PostgreSQL: Choose a Mirror (http://wwwmaster.postgresql.org/download/mirrors-ftp/binary/v8.2.21/win32/postgresql-8.2.21-1.zip) to port 5433.

And connect to that instead.

Which Operating System, Firewall, and Anti-Virus are you using?

For W7 and Vista you must set \holdem manager\dbcontrolpanel.exe, holdemmanager.exe and hmhud.exe are started as administrator. Run the windows explorer and navigate to your Holdemmanager installation directory. Right click the executables and select properties... then select "Run as admin" from the compatibility tab.

Add exceptions to the windows firewall for holdemmanager.exe and hmhud.exe, even if the firewall is turned off. If you have a 3rd party firewall, do the equivalent or uninstall it temporarily.

Make sure your video card drivers and windows auto updates are fully updated. Make sure you have Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 (or later for w7) installed.

It still doesn't work!

I tried to rebbot

I tried:

Start > Programs > PostgreSQL > 8.x > Stop Service

Start > Programs > PostgreSQL > 8.x > Start Service

I didn't found: \postgresql\8.x\data\postmaster.pid file

"If that doesn't help you will have to reinstall PostgreSQL completely
Try installing SQL 8.2: PostgreSQL: Choose a Mirror to port 5433.

And connect to that instead."

Will I loose my data base if I do this?

Which Operating System, Firewall, and Anti-Virus are you using? Windows Vista, OutpostPro Firewall, ESET NOD32 Antivirus

\holdem manager\dbcontrolpanel.exe, holdemmanager.exe and hmhud.exe are run as admin

Add exceptions to the windows firewall for holdemmanager.exe and hmhud.exe are added as exceptions in windows defender.
I choose "Allow all activities" from holdemmanager.exe and hmhud.exe in Outpost options

My video card drivers is updated, I run windows auto updates (Microsoft .NET Framework 4 updated).

I don't want to loose all my hand histories. Can I try installing SQL 8.2: PostgreSQL: Choose a Mirror to port 5433 as you suggested without loosing my datas?

Thanks in advance.

Uninstall OutpostPro Firewall. And reboot.
Install SQL 8.2 to port 5433 and reimport all your hands into a new database.

You can attempt to reinstall SQL 8.3.x
But it's unlikely you'll be able to connect to the old database.

I cannot install ProgresSQL 8.2. It blocks at "service configuration" window when I have to enter "account password" and "verify password". I get this message error: "invalid username or password specified".
What password do I have to enter at this time?

Delete the postgres user first.

dclick on Start and go to Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt

* If you are on Vista, rightclick and choose "Run as Administrator".

A black box should appear. Type 'net user postgres /delete' (without the quotes) and press enter.

The user is now deleted and you can (re)install PostgreSQL.
Then install it and as password use: postgrespass

Also turn on the secondary Logon. The secondary logon service is a standard windows service which is available on every windows computer. In the latest versions it is not started automatically. You need to start it via control panel > administrative tools > services. Starting it once should insure it works in the future also.

OK Thanks.

I succeed in installing ProgreSQL 8.2. I could create a new database in Holdem Manager 1 but not with HM2. The software bolcked when I clicked on "Finish" when the message "click Finish to perform the following actions and start Holdem Manager 2 * Create database HoldemManager2 It may take a few seconds to create your database. Please be patient." But after 30 min, the message "Work in progress. Please stand by..." is still present and nothing happened!

Now how Can I re-import my hand histories in my new data base in holdem manager 1? I cannot find them back?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Run a import from folder on your archive folder, default: C:/HMArchive

Thanks I can re import about 25 000 hands from C:/HMArchive but not the other hands!

It's still impossible for me to create a database in HM2!

Now, I'm having a new big problem with HM1: when opening HM, a window with "Activate your software" appears.
I don't understand this message because my licence key is registered and active since 2010-11-16 17:28:01 as it still appears in your website at https://www.holdemmanager.com/store/myAccount.php

HM cannot connect to the server. I don't think it comes from my connection because all internet applications on my computers are working normally!

"There were errors during activation. You can retry activating online or go back and try another method. If problems persist please contact customer service"

Here is a copy/paste of the message details:

1) Open your Internet Explorer and go to Tools -> Internet Options -> Connections and click on "LAN-Settings" at the bottom.
2) Uncheck every box in the small new menu and click ok.
3) Try to register HM again.
