I just paid $80 for the software but it does not work.

I installed postgresql, then I installed Holdemmanager. When I tried to run Holdemmanager, I get this message:

A connection to Postgresql could not be made. Would you like to have holdemmanager attempt to start the service?

I am requesting some help or to get my money back.

slight overraction don't you think?

It's working fine for everyone, so calm down and wait for the pretty good support team to help you out.

Please try this FAQ http://holdemmanager.net/forum/showthread.php?t=8182 and if the problem persists then start the PostgreSQL service as shown in this FAQ http://www.holdemmanager.net/faq/afmviewfaq.aspx?faqid=34 then after a while it will fail and give an error please copy and paste this error and then go to Control panel > Admin Tools > Event Viewer > Windows Log > Application error and look near the top for an red error sign, click on this and view the details of the error and post it here

Thanks for the reply. Here is what I have done so far:

1. I downloaded and installed Holdem Manager. Note that I unchecked the "install as a service" box.
2. I downloaded and installed PostgresQL.
3. When I tried to run Holdem Manager, I get the message: "A connection to Postgresql could not be made. Would you like to have holdemmanager attempt to start the service?"
4. Clicking yes does not do any good.

5. I tried uninstalling both Holdem Manager and Postgresql, followed by reinstalling, but this time I installed Postgresql first. I did everything else the same. The result was the same. I have the User Access Control disabled as per the instrictions.

6. I checked the System32\drivers\hosts file, and the required line was already there.

I am using Vista, and the Holdem Manager version is 1.08.04

Try this:

Start >> Control Panel >> Administrative Tools >> Services....

Find the "Secondary Logon" and enable it.

Then try starting up HEM and it should work.

tmash,

Thanks for the suggestion. I found the secondary logon file, but it had already been enabled.

Are you running it as an administrator?

Yes, I log in as administrator.

No i meant are you running HEM as an administrator. Go to the folder you installed HEM into, find the executable, right click and go to properties -> compatibility -> and check the box beside "run as administrator"

vpv1010
06-05-2009, 04:11 PM
I can't check the box next to "run as administrator" because it is grayed out.

vpv1010
06-05-2009, 04:19 PM
Also in the Compatibility tab, there is a line that says "run this program in compatibility mode for:" and there is a check box next to it, but it is unchecked. Is that how is should be?

I'm not sure at the moment as I don't have Vista installed on my laptop. I"ll have to check it out when I get home tonight.

Do you get an error message after it asks you "A connection to Postgresql could not be made. Would you like to have holdemmanager attempt to start the service?"

vpv1010
06-05-2009, 04:36 PM
Yes, it says "Sorry Holdem Manager was unable to start the service".

Are you sure you're checking the properties for the correct file?

C:/Program Files/RVG Software/Holdem Manager/

Look for file labelled: HoldemManager.exe

Right click, go to Properties, then Compatibility and set it to Run as Admin

I can't check the box next to "run as administrator" because it is grayed out.

This means it is running as ADMIN.
But you also need to do the same for :
HuD .exe
DBcontrol.exe

vpv1010

PostgreSQL is listed in my Program Files folder, if that's what you mean. But inside that folder there is not an executable file.

when you start HM are getting an error message?
Can you post a screen shot of it?

vpv1010
06-05-2009, 05:37 PM
I don't know how to post a screen shot, but when I start HM, a "connect to postgresql" box comes up. When I click on "connect", a box comes up which is titled "db control panel", and it says "a connection to postgresql could not be made. Would you like Holdem Manager attempt to start the service?"
When I click yes, another box comes up which says "Sorry, Holdem Manager was unable to start the service".

If PostgreSQL is not installed in the services theres something wrong.

Im presuming you dont have a previous database your worried about losing, if so go to C:\Program Files and delete the PostgreSQL folder, then follow these instructions for reinstalling http://www.holdemmanager.net/faq/afmviewfaq.aspx?faqid=176

Now you mentioned something about unticking install as a service for HM, maybe you done it for PostgreSQL? Anyway when installing this time the only tickbox you should untick is when the installation is complete and it asks about the stack builder, all the other tickboxes should be left as default

In the FAQ, it says:

2) Unzip the contents of the zip file on to your desktop and then double click on postgresql-8.3.msi to begin the installation.

If you get an error message here saying that the pacage was corrupt or something similar then you probably didn't unzip the files to your desktop and instead you are trying to install it right from the zip file which will not work

Is this important? I don't know how to get the file to download to my desktop. Downloads automatically go to a downloads folder. How do I fix this?

unimportant - just install Postgresql *with the defaults per the HM instructions* then check that Postgresql is running *as a service*.
