Just thought I'd mention I was having the timeout problem, and creating new db and then switching back to old one didn't work. I then followed the advice of changing the conf file settings mentioned earlier, running a vacuum and reindex, rebooted and now it has worked.

HM2 FAQ -- Quick Start HM2 Guide -- Licensing -- Postgresql issues -- Top 10 Performance Tips
I create a new DB and tried to switch to an old one without success. Then, when i relaunch HM i see this message:
" The following error occurred when trying to open the DB. Failed to establish a connection to '170....' "
DB Control Panel appears and when i hit connect button i see a message of PostgreSQL error.
My old DB sizes around 350MB, please help.
Turn on the secondary Logon. The secondary logon service is a standard windows service which is available on every windows computer. In the latest versions it is not started automatically. You need to start it via control panel > administrative tools > services. Starting it once should insure it works in the future also.
This is usually a firewall or windows update issue.
First try to reboot.
If no help, try this:
Start > Programs > PostgreSQL > 8.x > Stop Service
Start > Programs > PostgreSQL > 8.x > Start Service
If that doesnt help delete the \postgresql\8.x\data\postmaster.pid file, if you see it. And reboot.
If that doesn't help you will have to reinstall PostgreSQL completely
