Default Postgres Problem: Failed to establish a connection to 127.0.0.1

    Hey,

since today postgres wont start anymore when I try to open HEM.
It always shows: "Failed to establish a connection to 127.0.0.1"

I have already seen that there is a thread about this problem but I dont think it concerns me since it is not a general windows update problem I think.

All I did was a defragmentation of the hard drive yesterday and installing a new bluetooth update for windows.

What I have done so far:

    1) UAC is off
    2) firewalls, anitvirus is deinstalled
    3) fixed the host file (pretty much screwed it totally up, since I deleted the whole text of the file and put in "127.0.0.1 localhost")

I was going to reinstall postgres but I dont want to loose my DB since I am not sure if I have all my hand history files.

Please help me out on this one.

    Solutions:
    1. Reboot your computer
    2. If that doesn't help look for the hidden system file postmaster.pid in the postgresql data folder, delete it and reboot your computer again.
    3. Click on start and look for 'Services' (= the windows services) and click on it.
Right click on 'PostgreSQL Server' -> properties.
Click on the tab 'Log On' and select 'Local System account
    Restart the service

There wasnt a postmaster.pid, so I deleted the postmaster.opts does that change anything?

I changed the postgres server to "local host account" but when I try to start the service it says: "The process couldnt be started... the system couldnt find the path"

The problem is still present, but thanx for the support.

    don't delete postmaster.opts.

Download the full SQL 8.4.4 installer from PostgreSQL: The world's most advanced open source database and install it again.

During installation, if it won't accept the postgrespass password:
click on Start and go to Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt

    * If you are on Vista, rightclick and choose "Run as Administrator".

A black box should appear. Type 'net user postgres /del' (without the quotes) and press enter.

The user is now deleted and you can (re)install PostgreSQL.

Usually a windows update of updates of your security software can cause such problems.
