backing up HEM database

I got a new computer and need to transfer the database from one computer to the next. But before I do the transfer, I wanted to: (1) backup the database.

My first question is: how do I backup the current hand histories as a safeguard (see below)? IOW, where are the files & what are the specific steps?


Note: Before backing up and restoring a Database, backup your current Hand History files as a safeguard! If you've been archiving your Hand Histories they should be easily accessible; if not, Export your Hand Histories from your current Database first so you always have a backup.

My second question is: I have opened pdAdmin III & found the page w/ the databases listed based on the directions in the FAQs (BACKUP & RESTORE DATABASE). My second question is: Is the filename @ the top of HEM the filename for my HEM database (in pgadmin III)?

If your doing a clean reinstall or moving HM to a new computer you should consider the following.

Export and Import your Hand Histories and/or backup and restore your database

Export any tourney summaries by selecting all your tournaments in the Data View Sub-Tab of the Tourney > Results Menu and choose Export Tourney Results and summaries

I have backed up the database & saved the hand histories & followed the steps listed above. I have also downloaded HEM to my new computer. I have also transferred the database file to the new computer. But I do not know the password for postregsql when I am prompted for it. (I made no changes and followed the default download for HEM omaha.)

I have attached a file that gives the specific error.

BTW, my OS = windows 7. I think this is one of those times when you need to disable the settings. (but I don't know how.)

PT3's default name/password is - postgres/dbpass
HM's default name/password is - postgres/postgrespass

Start HM > Options > Database Management > Password:

If that doesnt help:

1. Go to C:\Program Files\PostgreSQL\8.x\data, move the the pg_hba file to your Desktop and open it with notepad.
2. Scroll to the bottom and change all md5 to trust. Save and close the file
3. Move the file back to the data folder
4. Restart the PostgreSQL service: Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services

HM will accept any password now.

I have run thru the postregsql & pointed it to the file that contains the backed up database. However, when I open HEM on the new computer, I still get zero hands + zero players. IOW, HEM is not recognizing the backed up database. I"m also concerned that the file size for the backed up database is too small (237 KB for approx 40K players).

Does this sound right? How do I reopen the database & get it imported back into HEM on the new computer once I have backed up & moved the database onto the new computer? (must be in the FAQs?)

You are restoring a .backup file, and the file is only 237KB? That is far too small for a DB Backup.

If the .backup won't restore properly I suggest you just make a new DB and import your archived and exported files. If you play a site like stars/ftp you can email their support and ask for all your old hand histories and tourney summaries.

So how do I make a new database? I have imported the hands from files in the past. And I backed up my database hand histories that contains 731 files & its total size is 648 MB. Does that file size sounds right for 40K players? And, if so, should I just import the hands from this file folder (using HEM autoimport IMPORT FILES option)?

I've also backed up tourney (150KB) & rakeback (1KB). So shouldn't I be able to just reimport those files to get my old database back?

Plus how do I create a new database?
