New encoding is incompatible with template DB?!

Help, I just installed postgres v. 8.4 since the others versions gave me errormessages "Error reading file D:/Program/POSTGRESQL/8.4/data/postgresql.conf".

Anyway now when I installed the 8.4 and tried to create a new database with HM it says:
"22023: new encoding (SQL_ASCII) is incompatible with the encoding of the template database (UTF8)"

What to do?

I think you should be using at least version 1.08.04, and possibly the latest beta, but I digress.

What version of PostgreSQL are you using?

If it is 8.2 or 8.4 you are going to need to uninstall it. I personally use Revo Uninstaller (free) to uninstall anything, but it isn't necessary.

You must *fully* remove PostgreSQL if you want to install it again.

- Uninstall from control panel. (Start > Programs > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > PostgreSQL 8.x > Uninstall)
- manually delete the Program Files\Postgresql folders
- run the command "net user postgres /delete" (Start > Run)
- reboot.
