Default Cannot connect to postgresql database

    Hi,
Out of the blue this started happening.
Everytime i open HM2, after about 30 seconds there is a white box that appears saying
"Holdem Manager cannot connect to the PostgreSQL....................
    CONNECTIONSTRING:
    SERVER=......................"

Incredibly frustrating as it messed up my session yesterday and I can't use it today. As well as putting me in a state of general tilt.

Anyway, I've tried all the steps in the article and/or video except the advanced steps.
I don't feel comfortable messing with the winsock adaptor etc.(the link you give to do this may be out of date) and i don't really wanna reinstall postgres as your article on that says it's "hit or miss" whether i'll lose my database.

Help would be appreciated as i presently feel like punching myself in the face.
    (running windows 7)

Resetting the winsock adapter is easy. It is impossible to mess anything up. You just go to command prompt (running as admin), and type:

    netsh winsock reset.

    Then restart your computer.

Please see the following guides for postgres related issues.

i think i've tried everything except the reinstall.
So i guess i'll do that tomorrow. No doubt i'll lose my entire database (for ever, or at least until i've spent another 8 hours reimporting it).
    I am now actually depressed.

    hi,
i just noticed that there is some unknown user on my computer (in the C drive) which is giving me concerns.
I additionally noticed that postgresql was modified at the exact same time as this user's ntuser.dat file.
Do you know if this user is relevant to the postgresql not working?
Should i remove this user account(which exists in C drive)? I don't know if i can work out how to do this or if it is dangerous to do this

This happened to me as well this morning.

Any idea what might caused the issue?

If I wait it out while using my newly purchased PT4, do you think and update will solve it?

What's the name of this new user?
    Is it postgres.[yourWindowsname]-PC.xxx (xxx is a number like 005, 006, 007)

    It's normal:
    postgres
    postgres.[yourWindowsname]-PC
    postgres.[yourWindowsname]-PC.000
    postgres.[yourWindowsname]-PC.001
    etc.
    are created as new users.

Installing a different version of PostgreSQL to a different port number.
Then reimporting all your hands into a new empty database, usually is the best thing to do.

    BEFORE you do this:

    First try to reboot.

    If no help, try this:

    Start > Programs > PostgreSQL > 8.x > Stop Service

    Start > Programs > PostgreSQL > 8.x > Start Service

If that doesnt help delete the \postgresql\8.x\data\postmaster.pid file, if you see it. And reboot.

If that doesn't help you will have to reinstall PostgreSQL completely. This will allow you to re-connect to your old database.

No, i do have a user called postgres but I was talking about another user with a human-like name ("Andrew" or something) which was created in february this year without my knowledge (some time after I bought the pc first-hand).

i just deleted that account (hopefully not a catastrophic error...my pc is still working it seems).

just tried to stop the postgresql service (which i have tried a couple times before and then i started it again). Now i am unable to stop the service:
    "System error 5 has occured.
    Access is denied.
The stop command returned an error <2>
    Press return to continue"

does this give any clues as to what is happening?
